How to discover your wedding floral style

There are limitless possibilities for creating a wedding floral design. Between style and color the options can feel endless. I could probably redo my wedding one hundred times and still find a beautiful floral aesthetic. Are you going for a classic, bright and fun direction? Or do you prefer earthy and romantic tones? I’ve put together a few considerations narrowing down and determining the best wedding florals for your big day.

Find Inspiration

Pinterest is the obvious choice for starting to find wedding inspiration. But beyond Pinterest, Instagram, blogs, and good old-fashioned magazines can still provide some great wedding inspiration. Start noticing images you’re drawn to and see if there’s a pattern. It might feel like you’re saving everything at first, but eventually, you’ll start to notice that all of your bouquets are round, or all of your floral centerpieces have a touch of hot pink. It doesn’t take long to start to see a preference peek through.

How do you want your wedding to feel?

Starting to establish how you want your wedding to feel is a good step in creating a design and vision for the day. You can convey a romantic wedding feeling versus a modern feeling through your florals. Think back on weddings and events you’ve attended. How did they make you feel? Did anything stand out or stay in your memory that you want to either mimic or avoid?

Work with your venue’s strengths and setting

Your venue truly sets the stage for your wedding floral style. Is your ceremony indoors in a church or outdoors in a park? Is your reception in a banquet hall or a tent? Your florals should complement the location in terms of style. You don’t necessarily think boho when inside of a ballroom.

Logistically, you’ll also want to consider the design possibilities and limitations. Is a hanging floral installation on your must-have list? Well, then you’ll want to ensure there’s an option to rig an arrangement. Are your guest tables long or round? This can affect the shape of your centerpieces.

Complement your Dress

Is your wedding dress modern? Ballgown? Clean and minimal? You’ll want a bouquet that compliments your dress and your look for the day. You spent so much time finding the perfect dress; ensure you also have the perfect bouquet to finish the look.

Connect to your Personal Style

Along the same lines as your dress, your overall personal style should affect your floral design. Your personal style influences lots of your wedding decisions - from your dress, to your colors, to your decor. And it should also influence your wedding florals. It’s important that your wedding florals somewhat reflect your personality, so the day feels suited to you.

Color

I’m not a huge fan of creating rigid wedding flower colors. Working in two overly simplistic colors can make designs feel dated. Instead, I like to think of your colors as a nuanced palette that plays with different shades and tones. Whether you prefer a more neutral palette, something bold can help determine your overall floral style and the flowers available in those moods.

Consider the Season

You’ll want your florals to feel appropriately suited to your personal style, but it’s also important that they work within the season of the wedding. Using seasonal flowers helps create a more thoughtful and natural design.

While these considerations will help you determine your style, above all, it’s important to trust the advice and recommendations from your wedding florist. They’ll be able to guide you with designs that fit your style, personality, venue, and budget.
